Winter In Tantora Launches in AlUla & Here’s What To Know

The start of the planting season in AlUla, known as Al-Marba'aniya was launched this week, which marks the inauguration of the namesake festival Winter in Tantora.

For those who are unfamiliar, the "Tantora" sundial, AlUla's most famous monument, is located in the old town. Because of the vital role the sundial played in the lives of the city's residents, the winter celebration is named after it.

Winter at Tantora is a six-week festival that runs concurrently with AlUla Moments, a two-month festival that is similar to Riyadh Season, which is now in its third year. Over the course of the six weeks, visitors to the festivities will be able to participate in a variety of events and engage in cultural exploration.

“It’s been a very warm welcome for us, and we’re really happy to be here,” said Michael Halimi, who visited the Kingdom with his family from France.

“I think we’ve met some of the kindest and most honest people here,” Halimi’s daughter Sarah told Arab News. “It’s the curiosity of the unknown that brought us here, and we’re really glad we came.”

Different sections in the Old Town display the local heritage and facets of daily social life.

During the five-day festival, visitors enjoyed many activities such as a 45-minute theatrical presentation of the legendary Arab explorer Ibn Battuta, followed by a shorter performance explaining the significance of Tantora's architecture.

A convivial farmer's market boasts locally produced goods from the oasis farms. For a full immersion in the Tantora spirit, visitors can also plant crops in the AlUla soil.
