KSA has seen large growth in the number of women starting their own businesses. Local businesses keep money inside of the country and provide women with opportunities to grow. Supporting local businesses can be difficult, but these are some of the best (and easiest) ways to make sure your money is going to the right place.
1. Check social media
This is by far the easiest way to find entrepreneurs in your city. Many local businesses, like furniture repurposing company RetroFit, work exclusively on Instagram. Some are home-based since driving is an issue, so social media is your best bet.
2. Keep up with news
Saudi Arabia has over 50 initiatives to boost entrepreneurship among women, and you’re sure to learn about some if you keep up with local news. Start-up competitions, award ceremonies and events that gather entrepreneurs will be easy to spot in the news – one example is Women’s Entrepreneurship Day.
3. Find private initiatives
Big companies are partnering with women entrepreneurs to help their business grow. For example, Uber is delivering food from Biscotti KSA and Honey Bunch this month to promote their business.
4. Ask your friends
Everyone knows someone. If you reach out to your network, you’re sure to find someone whose friend does the best decorations or makes the best chocolates ever. It’s a guaranteed way to find local businesses that have your friends’ stamp of approval!
5. Spread the love
If you know someone who has a great business, don’t keep it to yourself! Share it with your friends and others who might be interested. Word of mouth is a big factor in the success of local businesses.
Why is it important to support women entrepreneurs? Narjis Ajabnoor, a chef, told Refinery29, "Saudi women are taking their own responsibilities into their own hands by making money and being more independent. It is a revolution to women here. We are seeing flowers grow, so we continue to water them 'til they reach perfection. We are finally being noticed.
