5 Easy Décor Tips to Revamp Your Home in 2017

These simple decor tips will make your home seem brand new.

Jonathan and Drew Scott of The Property Brothers

The Property Brothers, Jonathan and Drew Scott, share five easy tips on how to spruce up your home in 2017. The twins from HGTV’s home-makeover reality programme show how fun and cost-effective little changes can add flair to shake up your home.

Declutter: If you don’t use, then loose.

People don't realise how much their clutter can bring them down. “It is the simplest thing,” Jonathan says. “We have so much excess stuff we don’t need that somebody else could use.”

Hot Tip: If you’re strapped for time, pick one space each week, whether it’s a closet or bathroom, and dedicate just 20-30 minutes a week. It can really make a dent in your overstuffed, cluttered closet. Remember Rome wasn’t built in a day.

Alternative Hot Tip: Everything you have should have a specific space in your home, not just thrown into a cupboard and out of mind. Remember, just because a space is clear, doesn’t mean it’s functional. If it’s something you use every day, like a coffee machine or blender, make sure you give it some prime counter space, so you’re not always putting it away.

Paint a Feature Wall

“It’s the second easiest thing to do,” Jonathan says. To find your colour combinations, “go to Google images or Pinterest and look at pictures. If you don’t see your colour scheme, it probably means your place looks kind of dated.”

Hot Tip: If you are a bit conservative when trying to incorporate colour, accentuate your living areas by adding colour with your accessories. Throw pillows, art, area rugs, pillows and home accessories is a simple place to start, with minimum cost and maximum output.

Simple Storage Solutions

“I’ve attached a magnetic strip underneath cabinets for spices in mason jars. Or you can get little baskets that slide onto your bottom shelf and give you space,” Jonathan says.

Hot Tip: Multiple storage options are a great idea for a kitchen pantry closet. Sliding shelf organizers give you access to food items and help you avoid repeat spending at the supermarket. Pull-out baskets are wonderful for potatoes and onions, while wire racks are perfect for storing your favourite teas.

Make Your Walls Work for You

“Do custom built-ins or even just open racks on your walls,” Drew suggests. “Taking things off the ground level, like bikes or boxes, can really open up a space.”

Hot Tip: The best way to stay organised is to install storage systems that fit your specific needs. A high shelf keeps excess items out of the way but accessible when needed. And a shelf to hang bikes or hooks to hang guitars is a genius solution for freeing up floor space.

Organise Your Closet

“If you look at most closets, it’s one shelf and one rack with so much wasted space,” Jonathan says. Add drawer systems on shelves or shoe holders to make the most out of your space.

Hot Tip: Donate or sell any items of clothing you've had for more than a year without wearing. A good way of knowing what you’ve worn is to organise all your hangers facing one way, once you’ve worn the item, flip the hanger the other way. Within the year, you’ll know what you haven’t been wearing.
