The “Cabat” and “Knot” are undoubtedly two of Bottega Veneta’s most iconic, not to mention celebrity-approved bags. And the Italian luxury brand known for its leather goods justifiably believes the two beauties are worthy of a special exhibition. “ICONS in Dubai” showcases pieces from the archives, as well as recent ones, in The Dubai Mall boutique from June 1 to June 3.
The “Cabat” was the very first bag designed by Creative Director Tomas Maier when he joined the maison in 2001. The coveted bag features the trademark intrecciato technique that has become synonymous with the company that was founded in Vicenza in 1966 by Michele Taddei and Renzo Zengiaro (the company actually created the technique that sees skilled artisans weaving the leather.) What’s more, you can’t see a lining as the leather is just as beautifully woven on the inside as it is on the outside.
The elegant and understated seamless tote, which is spacious and lightweight, is the embodiment of Bottega Veneta’s core ethos as its contemporary and timeless design is created with the finest traditional craftsmanship. Jennifer Aniston and Reece Witherspoon are two of the stars that have been spotted keeping all that artisanal mastery close at hand.
The “Knot,” which was first created in the 1980s, is another one of the brand’s most beloved handbags. When Maier arrived at Bottega Veneta, he instantly recognised the special quality of the small, rounded box clutch. The German Creative Director went on to create a new closure in the shape of a small intrecciato leather knot and gave the bag its name.
The bag’s perfect shape and clear function have proved an irresistible canvas for Maier and the Bottega Veneta artisans. It’s even inspired other styles featuring the same closure, such as the “City Knot” and the “Olimpia Knot.”
Alessandra Ambrosio, Rashida Jones and Kim Kardashian West are a couple of the celebrities who have been seen with the famed bag on the red carpet.
Over the years, countless versions of the “Cabat” and the “Knot,” including limited editions and classics that come out in seasonal colours, have featured in the Bottega Veneta collections. They are crafted in different ways and materials (one unforgettable “Knot” bag came in 18-carat gold with diamond-encrusted knots.) Both bags represent a link to the brand’s history and to its future, having become an iconic symbol of its unique philosophy.
