Swiss Edition: Uncovering Foodie Gems in Vaud

“Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.” - Hippocrates

Now, there are a few angles one can take on this quote by the ancient Greek physician. Eating for health? Yes. Eating for pleasure? I guess that depends on just how ‘pleasurable’ the food is.

One thing for sure is that Vaud, a Swiss canton around a 45-minute drive from Geneva, is the land of fine food and the gastronomy here is, nothing short of, impeccable. In fact, it is a must destination for foodies, demonstrated by the record number of restaurants awarded stars, toques, flowers and other marks of quality.

Indeed, Vaud’s food scene should be one of the top reasons for visiting. After all it is home to the Restaurant de l'Hôtel de Ville de Crissier, the 3 Michelin-starred wonder that is on about every best restaurant in the world list.

Restaurant de l'Hôtel de Ville de Crissier
An evening here will be about discovering what it actually takes to be revealed on the ‘Best Restaurant in the World’ lists, not to mention what it takes to be listed as number one.

Foie Gras Pistache

For us, it was about discovering magnificent displays of art on the plate before tasting exquisite flavours on the palette. The Duck Fois Gras with Pistachio is so artistic in its creation one may find it disconcertingly difficult to disturb its beauty. The Lobster with Three Carrots is indeed beautiful to look at, but far too tempting to simply admire.

Ze Fork
Named for the sculpture of a giant fork sticking (tines-down) out of Lake Geneva in Vevey – a small cobbled street town in Vaud - Ze Fork is a fashionable restaurant which features a menu that is a collection of mini prix-fixe menus broken down by a gustatory theme.

Le Potager (The Garden), for example includes a gastronomic selection of: melon gaspacho and mint opaline, cucumber chilliness with black garlic and lime cream or watermelon, tomatoes and smoked mozzarella mille-feuille. Meanwhile, La Terre, you guessed it, features a tasting of imaginative dishes from ‘the land’. There are multiple themes from which to choose, and thus, multiple reasons to return.

Eat Me
The capital of Vaud, Lausanne’s, newest innovative hot spot makes it possible to nibble your way around the globe in the course of an evening. Drawing from the “food souvenirs” that its owners have tasted throughout their travels, the chefs at Eat Me have created a menu that reflects everything from the most humble of street foods to the most modern of gastronomic delights.

The names of each dish are also sure to amuse. From Hmmmmmmmus to Electric Sashimiviche, diners are kept intrigued. With its airy lounge and stylish back dining room incorporating white window shutters, reminiscent of a colonial villa in a tropical destination, one step inside and you’ll feel the rhythm of Havana salsa dancing through your veins.
