As much as it feels as though the Met Gala took place just yesterday, it is true that preparations for the Met Gala 2019 are underway! The annual event is a sartorial affair we all look forward to judging – from the good, the bad and the downright fabulous and is set to take place on May 6th 2019. The soiree, held to raise funds for New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art has just announced it’s next installment’s theme.
The fashion fund raising extravaganza for 2019 is drawing inspiration from “Notes on a Camp” – which is an essay written by American writer, filmmaker, political activist and philosopher, Susan Sontag in 1964. This particular essay helped Sontag rise to fame as it explored the principles of “campness” – “a love of the unnatural: of artifice and exaggeration,” as the author once explained in Partisan Review.
What can we expect? Well we’re hoping for a plethora of outrageous designer creations, outlandish accessories and flamboyant styling. The theme entitled, “Camp: Notes on Fashion” will also be the basis of a year-long exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which will launch at the gala.
Andrew Bolton, the curator in charge of the Costume Institute, told the New York Times, “It felt very relevant to the cultural conversation to look at what is often dismissed as empty frivolity but can be actually a very sophisticated and powerful political tool, especially for marginalized cultures.”
The Met Gala also announced its four co-chairs for 2019 and the lineup is LIT! Lady Gaga, Harry Styles, Serena Williams and Gucci’s creative director, Alessandro Michele each represent the fashion, music, and sporting industries. Vogue US editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, who has chaired the Met Gala since 1995, will also be joining them.
2018’s event was hosted by Amal Clooney, Rihanna and Donatella Versace and had the theme of “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination” and each one of them made it a fashion extravaganza to remember – we cannot wait to see what 2019’s hosts have in store.
