Hadid explained how being the daughter of a refugee helped shape her values. “He was always religious and he prayed with us,” she said in the interview.
Hadid and her two siblings Gigi and Anwar were born to their Dutch-American mother Yolanda Foster, reality TV star and father Mohamed Hadid, now a real estate mogul.

Speaking about her participation in the march, Hadid revealed that her family’s own experiences pushed her to make the move. "I come from a really diverse background,” she said in another interview. “I've had incredible experiences all over the world, and I've learned that we're all just people, and we all deserve respect and kindness. We shouldn't treat people as if they don't deserve kindness just because of their ethnicities. It's just not right."
Her 68-year-old real estate tycoon father is very proud of his Palestinian roots, frequently reminiscing his home country through his Instagram posts.
In December 2015, he posted a series of old photographs of his Nazareth-born family as refugees in Syria. One of them showed him as an 18-month-old baby along with the rest of the Hadid family, to which he captioned, “Thank you #Syria for taking us in. And thank you America for allowing All of us to realize our dreams …”
