During her recent visit to the Saudi Arabian capital Riyadh, British Prime Minister Theresa May made a point of meeting Saudi Princess Reema bint Bandar bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud, Vice-President for women’s affairs at the General Sports Authority.
Discussions, held at the headquarters of the Saudi Arabian Olympic Committee in Riyadh, between the premier and the princess included mutual assistance between the two countries in the field of sports. Increasing participation and promoting the culture of community sports among Saudi women were also analyzed.
May also visited women’s sports facilities in the Kingdom and during her visit to one of the institutions, chatted with five to six year old girls playing basketball. "I've never played basketball,” she told the girls. “I played netball, but that's not quite the same thing."
Saudi women who are athletically-inclined have been hearing good news and are enthusiastic since the Saudi princess’s appointment to the kingdom’s sports authority, to oversee women’s sports affairs. In recent months, the kingdom has witnessed a surge in sports activities for women under Al-Saud’s patronage.
With the 42-year-old royal’s continuous efforts to pave the way for Saudi women, her role as vice-president at the Saudi General Sports Authority allows her an opportunity to break down obstructions for female athletes in the Kingdom.
