Muslim women across the globe have been often excluded by brands when it comes to swimwear. However, there has been a surge recently of labels finally catering to more modest customers, such as Lyra, a modest swimwear brand created by Ikram Zein. Lyra was created out of Zein’s own personal struggle with finding swimwear that was reflective of her modest and active lifestyle. For about a year, she collected ideas and insights from potential customers, then creating and trying various designs before finally launching Lyra.
“Ever tried going swimming in a DIY get-up that looks like it’s just been thrown together… fishing out your brother’s oversized t-shirt, leggings from yesteryear, and a makeshift wrap for your hair, so you feel covered and comfortable before heading to the pool? I’ve been there.”
“So, when it came to my next holiday abroad, and struggling to find something modest and weather appropriate to tackle the waters in, I decided to create my own range of swimwear that reflected my style, beliefs and philosophy,” Zein explained on Lyra’s website.
A quick browse through the collection reveals a treat of options for any modest swimmer, various chic pieces that mostly come in elegant neutrals with a few that have a patch of print here and there. The brand’s signature feature is undoubtedly its piped detailing and smart design details, from zip-up turtlenecks, to necklines with drape detailing, to pretty and detachable skirts.
“Inspired by some of my favourite looks, modified to the level cover I wanted to achieve, the LYRA brand has all the elegance of classic Hollywood, Moroccan beach cool and minimalist design. The swimsuits are made from light weight, fast dry, premium quality Italian Carvico fabric with High UV protection and can be bought as a full set, or separates, including a chic turban style head covering, leggings, and long line, long sleeve tops, so you can create the fit and cover you want,” she explained.
