Saudi Arabia’s plans for a sustainable future involves the use of electric cars and the country has just installed its first ever electric car charging station. Situated in the kingdom’s capital of Riyadh, the new charging station can be found close to the airport road at a franchise of SASCO, which is one of the country’s biggest local petrol station chains.
SASCO announced the launch of electric car charging stations that are to be installed at a number of their petrol stations across the kingdom, and will be up and running by the end of the year. The company responsible for installing the charging points is an American one, Schindler Electric. It was last year that Saudi Arabia announced the decision to follow the UAE’s example and to launch the initiative to rely on the use of electric cars by 2030.
Collaborating on this concept, the kingdom’s own Saudi Electricity Co teamed up with Japanese companies including, Tokyo Electric Power Co, Takaoka Toko and Nissan Motor. Together, the companies are planning to launch Saudi’s first ever EV pilot project. Saudi Electricity Co stated that, "under the agreement, fast-charger stations will be developed to charge EVs in 30 minutes. Such a move is part of the company's strategy to reduce reliance on oil and cut emissions.”
The kingdom’s choice to encourage EVs is to reduce its pollution emissions that go into the environment, taking steps in working around climate change.
