In 2015, Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, Chairwoman of the General Women's Union, Supreme Chairwoman of the Family Development Foundation, and President of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood, inaugurated the first ever Emirati Women’s Day. Also marking the date that the UAE launched its General Women's Union on 28th August, 1975.
Now, in its fifth year, Emirati Women’s Day continues to highlight the achievements of Emirati women around the world and in celebration of the momentous occasion, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, shared a heartfelt and inspirational message across his social media accounts.
The Ruler of Dubai’s video touched many, as he shared his gratitude for the women of the UAE and believes that they are the glue and “epitome of strength that hold the nation together,” describing women as “role models” and that they “elevate the rank of the nation.”
With this year’s theme being ‘Women, Icons of Tolerance,’ it’s not surprise that the rest of the world is paying attention. The UAE’s Washington DC embassy also participated in celebrating the day dedicated to Emirati women everywhere, as they too released a video featuring Vice President of International Participants at Expo 2020, Maha Al Gargawi, who stated, “When we look at the workforce at Expo 2020, it’s more than 50% women.”
Many had much to say about the plight and accomplishments of Emirati women, including His Highness Sheikh Ahmed Bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman and Chief Executive of Emirates Airline & Group, who said, “Emirati women are icons of tolerance, exemplifying the core values held by our community via their care, determination, ability to nurture future generations, and pursue success in their various fields of work. Their hard work and talent have helped build our company and nation, and I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all Emirati women for setting new benchmarks and continuing to make us proud.”
