It seems as though film festival season is in full swing, and just as we’ve seen Toronto and Venice’s international film festivals come to a close, today is marking the opening of Abu Dhabi’s very own.
Beginning on the 12th of September and running until the 14th, Abu Dhabi’s film festival is supported by Minister of Tolerance Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan and is in collaboration with the German Embassy. Entitled, Tolerance Film Festival, the event will host and screen films that promote and encourage peace and tolerance.
The film submissions for Tolerance Film Festival will be shown at Manarat Al Saadiyat in Abu Dhabi as well as Dubai’s hip Al Serkal Avenue, Al Quoz. Some of the biggest Arab films will take to the silver screen, including, Where Do We Go Now? – Hala’ La Wayn? Nadine Labaki’s film set in a remote and rural Lebanese backdrop, in which a mixture of Christian and Muslim residents are coming to a head with a possible religious war. Another must see film, a documentary that explores a refugee camp, The Heart of Jenin will also be screening, alongside internationally acclaimed favourites such as, Karen Winther’s Exit, Wolfgang Fischer’s Styx, and Robert Mulligan’s 1962 classic, To Kill A Mockingbird.
Abu Dhabi’s tolerance focused film event will also encompass a recital by the Emirati Youth Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Riad Kudsi.
