Versace and Victoria Beckham
Remember the standout hairstyles that ruled the spring/summer 2017 catwalk shows? Well, the time is finally here to try them. Are you in the mood for something empowering, like a super sleek slicked back do? Then again, perhaps you’re more of a free spirit who loves to keep those curls naturally flowing or wants to give bohemian micro-plaits a try. The choice of whether to keep your hair long or short or sport a middle or deep side parting is also in your court.
Micro-plaits:
Roberto Cavalli and Jonathan Simkhai
Braids, the ultimate spring style, were seen in all shapes and sizes at the spring/summer 2017 fashion shows, with micro-plaits featuring dominantly. And the simple and chic bohemian styles seen at the Missoni and San Andres Milano shows proved you don’t have to be a schoolgirl to wear them. Roberto Cavalli models also donned this pretty hippie look, with the braids peeking from behind the models’ ears and under the rest of their hair. As well as being versatile, as you can work them in regardless of your hair length, accent braids can easily add character to any down do. For some extra hippie vibes, you can weave in ribbons and beads, just like Jonathan Simkhai.
Poker-straight manes:
Carolina Herrera and Narciso Rodriguez
Bring out the flat iron as ultra straight, shiny hair is back on the scene, with designers delighting in chic, polished locks. Gigi Hadid sported her hair this way, without a single flyaway in sight, during the Versace show. And other models at the Victoria Beckham and Acne Studios contributions demonstrated how this simple, super smooth minimalist style with a satiny finish can add a flattering, modern touch. We love the way Carolina Herrera gave it a twist, with her sculpted, half-up origami style. The kink-free trend was created with either a perfect middle parting or a deep side one, like at Narciso Rodriguez. And you can easily get the fuss-free look by using the right heated tools.
70s shag style:
Coach 1941 and Alexander Wang
The 70s shag was huge in 2016 and it is still high on the radar. This tousled, nonchalantly rebellious look was seen at Francesco Scognamiglio and Coach 1941. What’s more, Alexander Wang’s models looked as if they were going to get out their surfboards with their choppy, undone blonde shags.
Francesco Scognamiglio and Saint Laurent
The grown-out shag also made its presence clear, including the curly style seen at Saint Laurent and Roberto Cavalli’s masculine longer shag. The great news is that the soft lines and seamless layers look great on any kind of hair.
The wet look:
Balmain and Altuzarra
If you hate using a hairdryer during the summer, this is the style for you. Hair got a poolside touch on most of the catwalks, with many designers offering ultra cool gelled back takes. The super sleek look was spotted at Balmain and Givenchy, which offered some of the fiercest interpretations. It also ruled at numerous other shows, including Christian Siriano, Salvatore Ferragamo, Alexander McQueen, Christopher Kane, Altuzarra and Jason Wu to name a few.
Marchesa and Christopher Kane
Now we’ve ascertained it’s probably the biggest trend, the other awesome point is that it was presented on short and long hair and with middle or mannish side partings, so it’s all up to you. What’s more, it’s a super easy look to achieve; all you need is a comb, some mousse and gel for hold and perhaps a bit of oil to preserve the shine. For a night out, add some glam hair accessories like Marchesa.
80s curls:
Julien Macdonald and Alexander Wang
We love crazy, bold and fun curls and summer wouldn’t be the same without them. Continuing on from last season, waves featured heavily in shows, but in a messier, more naturally rumpled way. The way Alexander Wang and Barbara Casasola models sported their hair was a great example of these natural curls. Swirls also featured on the Topshop Unique (with hair swept to one side) and Proenza Schouler catwalks, with the latter designer making them appear soft and finding just the right balance so they didn’t look too wild.
Topshop Unique and Barbara Casasola
At Julien Macdonald, hair was scrunched and dishevelled in a glamorous sort of way and took on a sensual beachside wet look. As with the slicked back looks, curls were often styled with deep side partings for some extra showiness. If you fancy the way it looks, keep some texturising spray and a teasing comb handy.
