Glitzy and magical Dubai has made it onto Lonely Planet’s ‘Best in Travel 2020’ list. The emirate was listed as one of the ‘Top 10 Cities’ by the global travel authority, highlighting the fact it is as popular as ever as a holiday destination.

“Being recognised as a ‘must visit’ travel destination by Lonely Planet is testament to the dynamic evolution of Dubai’s tourism proposition, and with the support of one of the world’s leading travel publishers, increases consideration and appeal for the emirate in the lead-up to a momentous year,” Issam Kazim, CEO, Dubai Corporation for Tourism and Commerce Marketing, said.

It’s the unique combination of iconic attractions and entertainment destinations, outdoor and cultural offerings and the “boundary-pushing marquee projects” that make Dubai one of the world’s best cities for travellers. Plus, there’s the fact the emirate draws diverse global audiences and seems to have something for everyone, from travellers looking for a city break, a romantic getaway or a family holiday, to those on a quest for cultural or gastronomic adventures.

While compiling the list, the expert community of writers, bloggers and publishing partners at Lonely Planet outlined the key upcoming attractions and iconic landmarks that are sure to make Dubai even more appealing to visitors in 2020. These include the Dubai Expo 2020 and Ain Dubai, which stands over 250 metres tall on Bluewaters Island and promises breathtaking views of the city's beautiful coastline and famous landmarks. There’s also the Museum of the Future, a unique incubator that will explore the future of science, technology and innovation – a concept embodied by the stainless steel torus structure adorned with Arabic calligraphy.

Dubai’s historical treasures, museums and heritage areas have also been featured as the most important places of interest, including Al Seef,Al Shindagha Museum,Dubai Museum, the charming Souks of old Dubai and the Jumeirah Mosque. The recently-opened Jameel Arts Centre and the hidden gastronomic gems of Old Dubai that can be experienced with food tourism company Frying Pan Adventures have also been mentioned.

Other popular attractions and entertainment destinations included the renownedBurj Khalifa, The Dubai Mall, Burj Al Arab, and the Madinat Jumeirah. Dubai’s bustling beachfront promenades like La Mer and Kite Beach have been added as a must-visit too.

The city’s ecotourism destinations, including the mountain enclave of Hatta that showcases the emirate’s natural beauty, are another reason to book a flight. The emirate also invites visitors for a unique desert exploration at Al Marmoom, the largest tourism project of its kind in the region that focuses on the desert environment and the first unfenced desert conservation reserve in the UAE, rich with hundreds of species of wildlife.

Additionally, Dubai is continuing its focus on leisure and entertainment with attractions such as Dubai Parks and Resorts and IMG Worlds of Adventure, which are fast becoming top preferences for families.

Other great metropolises that made it onto Lonely Planet’s ‘Top 10 Cities’ list include Cairo, the only other Arabic one, Vancouver, La Paz, Salzburg and Washington DC. The ‘Best in Travel 2020’ list also ranks the ‘Top Ten Countries,’ ‘Top 10 Regions’ and ‘Top 10 Best Value’.
