It was while she was studying for a master’s degree in Pharmacology in the UK that 25-year-old Adam got the idea to give Barbie her most unusual makeover. After checking out the Barbie Style Instagram page, she noticed there weren’t any hijab-wearing dolls. As well as wanting to see a doll dressed the way she does, with modest clothing that covers the body, she wanted to create a reliable role model for Muslim girls and help erase misconceptions.

Once she was back in Nigeria, Adam went to the mall, bought a doll, dressed it up and posted it, she told Mic. Since creating Hijarbie, the Instagram page that sees Barbie dressed in headscarves, flowing abayas and full-length dresses instead of hotpants and sexy tops, has become wildly popular. The extremely talented Adam, who also runs the modest lifestyle brand Hanie (@haniecollection), styles and makes the dolls’ hijabs and clothes herself.

"I want [girls] to be inspired, this is about having an alternative and creating an awareness of having toys that adopts your religion and culture and in your own likeness, which at the end of the day, leads to an improvement in self-esteem," Adam told Mic. Incidentally, just before she started her inspiring project, toymaker Mattel unveiled new, more relatable Barbie dolls with different body shapes, skin tones, eye colours and hairstyles.
