While thinking of floral arrangements this season, colourful blooms may not automatically come to mind, but there are so many autumn-appropriate arrangements that can give your home the same kind of gorgeous makeover. Well-placed flowers can provide an instant fix to a dull space when you start getting creative. And whether it’s vibrant berry branches or petals in striking autumn colours like orange, auburn, brown, yellow and deep reds, there are so many statement-worthy ideas out there.
Cheryl Cox, head florist at Maison Des Fleurs, the Dubai-based luxury floral boutique known for its custom made, exquisite flower arrangements, shares some tips on how to transform your home with autumn flora for every festivity this season.
Making the arrangement last
To help keep flowers hydrated, use sharp scissors or a knife to cut the stems by an inch and place them in water to maximise absorption. Fresh flowers are long-lasting when water and containers are washed and refilled daily or at least every two to three days. For optimum lifespan, when changing the water recut the flowers’ stems where possible. Avoid using sugar in water while flower arranging, even though its commonly believed to provide nutrients, it also encourages bacterial growth.
Location, location, location
Think about where you want to place your arrangement to work out the height and width, as well as the size, of the vase needed. Your blooming flowers will last longer in a room with cool temperatures. As the radiance of autumn fills the air, avoid displaying them in direct sunlight or near appliances that generate heat, as your flowers can dehydrate quickly. Additionally, you shouldn’t display your bouquet near fruit since ripening fruits release tiny amounts of ethylene gas, which can reduce the longevity of your fresh arrangement.
Choose the best the season has to offer
Get your creative juices flowing this season by adding different textures and accessories to your arrangements. Use foliage and branches to outline the shape of your arrangement and then fill with adornments such as mini pumpkins, flowers, seeds and robust fruits. To truly accentuate an autumnal decor, experiment with bold colours, unique vases and non-traditional flowers.
