It has just been reported that The Red Sea Development Company (TRSDC), are set to build an airport for the new touristic destination.
At the Future Investment Initiative in Riyadh last week, UK architectural firm, Fosters + Partners took on the contract for the Red Sea’s International Airport.
Chief Executive Officer at TRSDC, John Pagano said in a statement, "Awarding the contract for the design of our airport is an important milestone and the first of the underlying infrastructure projects of the destination.”
The new airport is expected to be complete by 2022 and plans to host over 1 million tourists who will visit the Red Sea destination, every year. Not only that, in a bid to uphold the Red Sea Company’s sustainability goals, the design and concept of the airport will be 100% eco-friendly, and the structure is going to be inspired "by the natural beauty of the surrounding landscape and represent the vision." The transport hub will also aim to use smart technology to create an easy and relaxed travel experience for visitors.
The Head of Studio at Fosters + Partners, said in a statement about his delight at the new project in Saudi Arabia, "The Red Sea Airport has been envisaged as a gateway to one of the most unique resorts in the world and an integral part of the visitor experience. Inspired by the colors and textures of the desert landscape, the design seeks to create a calm and luxurious journey through the terminal and will become a transit hub for visitors coming in by both land and air.”
The news of the new airport falls in line with the kingdom’s plans to transform the Red Sea coast into a luxury holiday destination that may have its own laws.
Earlier this year, construction of the ambitious plans for a resort began, with the first phase of the project set to be complete by the end of 2022, and full completed by 2020.
This summer, The Red Sea Development Company announced that they would be offering 120 students the opportunity of a fully funded scholarship in fields that will allow them to learn how to run the project and plans for the destination.
