Saudi Arabia puts its culture at the forefront with 11 new cultural authorities to drive the development of sectors such as films, fashion, music, heritage, and the arts. The purpose behind the Cabinet’s decision is to promote culture as a lifestyle which leads to economic growth and increases KSA’s international exposure.

King Salman approved on February 4 setting up these new governmental ventures that have their own financial and administrative independence. Minister of Culture Prince Badr bin Abdullah bin Farhan, will head up the board covering literature, publishing and translation; fashion, film, heritage, architecture and design, visual arts, museums, theater, and performing arts, libraries, music, and culinary arts.

All the while setting new efficiency standards to help meet ministry goals as part of the Saudi Vision 2030 reform plan, the new cultural sub-sectors will support and encourage individuals and organizations within them.

Here some roles the cultural authorities will have:

  • The theater and performing arts authority will boost the theatrical field, along with establishing new vocational programs and certifications.
  • The Ministry of Culture will work to develop the Saudi movie sector and production environment and promote local filmmaking talent.
  • The literature, publishing and translation authority will support authors, preserve copyrights, and work on creative environments for training and investment opportunities.
  • The music authority will achieve a professional industry for musical arts, provide licenses, and set up a database for the music sector.
