Here's How Haute Hijab is Giving Back To Health Workers On The Frontlines

Melanie El-Turki, who founded Haute Hijab with husband Ahmed Zedan, is helping healthcare personnel on the frontlines by ensuring they have enough headscarves.

Fashion companies all over the globe have been involved in relief efforts to combat the novel coronavirus (COVID-19). And American company Haute Hijab is one of the latest to give back. The New York-based company is helping by donating headscarves to hijab-wearing healthcare workers fighting COVID-19.

With frontline nurses and doctors having to wash their headscarves after every use, it’s crucial for them to have some spare pieces at home. Haute Hijab, which sells headscarves in a variety of materials, whether solid, printed, casual or formal, initially planned to donate 250 Jersey hijabs to female medical staff. However, after they were snapped up in about 45 minutes, CEO and Co-Founder Melanie El-Turk decided to go further. As well as committing to send out as many hijabs as needed, she has started donating one Jersey headscarf to a Muslim healthcare worker each time a consumer buys the same product online.

“As a community, we Muslims make up a healthy portion of the healthcare profession and so many of our friends and family members are currently risking their lives with this pandemic. Having a fresh, sanitary hijab is one less thing they’ll have to worry about,” she wrote on Instagram. The company, which was launched in 2010 due to El-Turki’s inability to find comfortable, durable, beautiful and quality hijabs, also donated a portion of its sales from the third week of March to Launch Good’s COVID-19 Emergency Response campaign.
