Yet another adieu in the fashion industry! Givenchy announced that Clare Waight Keller left her role as Creative Director of the French luxury fashion house on the 10th of April 2020.
One of her notable designs is Meghan Markle’s wedding dress, which was a nod to Audrey Hepburn’s 1957 dress Funny Face by Hubert De Givenchy, and was reimagined with a wide boat neck, and 7/8th sleeves in a structured minimal silhouette.
The reason why Waight-Keller has decided to leave her position at Givenchy during a challenging time for the fashion industry has not been disclosed. But in her own words upon her departure from the fashion maison, she stated, “As the first woman to be the artistic director of this legendary Maison, I feel honoured to have been given the opportunity to cherish its legacy and bring it new life.”
Clare Waight Keller, who previously headed Pringle and Chloe, was responsible for bringing couture back to Givenchy, and giving the label an updated and modern identity, and went on to win British Designer of the Year Award in 2018.
Sidney Toledano, the Chairman and CEO of LVMH also spoke about the creative director’s departure from the French label and said with fondness, “Under her creative leadership, and in great collaboration with its ateliers and teams, the Maison reconnected with the founding values of Hubert de Givenchy and his innate sense of elegance.” Givenchy’s next creative director is yet to be revealed.
