The first Monday in May is almost here, but unfortunately, we won’t be seeing a sea of stars hitting the red carpet outside New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art tomorrow. Throughout the years, the Met Gala has been known to get every A-lister scrambling to find the most standout, buzzed-about look, whether ultra-high-glam, totally avant-garde or just plain outlandish.
And we were all geared up to see our favourite celebrities’ interpretation of the “About Time: Fashion and Duration.” theme. For 2020, Andrew Bolton, the Costume Institute’s curator, was inspired by the 1992 Sally Potter film Orlando, based on Virginia Woolf’s novel of the same name. Another reason we can’t wait for a new event date to be released is that this year’s extravaganza is co-chaired by Nicolas Ghesquière, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Meryl Streep, Emma Stone and Anna Wintour, the American Vogue Editor-in-Chief who has been in charge of the event since 1995.
With online fads like The Met Gala Challenge and the first High Fashion Twitter Met Gala, it seems we’re definitely not the only ones who will be sorely missing the beloved celebration of fashion. While the fundraiser for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute is indefinitely postponed, we’ll just have to take a look at the best looks the stars have stunned us with over the years.
From Kendall and Kylie Jenner wearing vibrant coordinating dresses adorned with feathers to Rihanna's mega canary-yellow train, some of these looks are really iconic. Not to mention that Sarah Jessica Parker headpiece that sparked a million memes and Kate Moss’s gold lame backless, one shouldered mini dress and matching turban. The wildest moments may even inspire you to answer Billy Porter and Vogue’s invitation to recreate your favourite red carpet look from past Met Galas. (Just don’t forget to share it online using the hashtag #MetGalaChallenge.)
