It’s A Go: Burberry Will Stage A Runway Show In The Great Outdoors

While some designers have already ditched the traditional fashion calendar for now, Riccardo Tisci isn’t ready to say ciao.

The global fashion calendar has undoubtedly been thrown into chaos by the COVID-19 pandemic. While some labels have opted to break with the fashion calendar or not show their new collections in September, fashion lovers recently found out there’s at least one great fashion show to look forward to in the next few months. Burberry is one of the first major brands to confirm its plans for the September fashion weeks. The British luxury label has announced it will hold a spring 2021 runway show in the great outdoors on September 17. There won’t be an audience, however the digital experience will be recorded and available to stream live so anyone can watch.

The brand’s latest move is all about applauding the need to re-couple again. “As humans, we have always had a deep affinity to nature. We have had to respect and rely upon its power for our very existence, whilst marveling and reveling in its extraordinary beauty," Creative Director Riccardo Tisci said in a statement. "Especially recently, we have all yearned to reconnect again and for this show, I wanted to celebrate these feelings by bringing our community together in a creative experience that takes place within the beautiful, natural landscape of Britain."

The show, which has been described as a "live physical presentation" in a press release by the coveted brand, will be completely carbon neutral, with emissions offset through Burberry's Regeneration Fund. Taking place on the eve of London Fashion Week, it will only be attended by the models and members of the Burberry team.

While speaking to WWD about the future of fashion shows Tisci, a former Creative Director at Givenchy, made it clear he didn’t want to see the loss of beautiful fashion events. The Italian designer explained he believes the fashion week schedule should continue, but needs to be re-thought so it’s aligned with today’s world. “We must recognise that the world is changing, and we must adapt and redefine our landscape through new forms of expression. Ultimately, to me, it will always be important to keep a physicality to fashion, to be able to see and understand the texture and movements of clothes, but in new ways." He also touched on the unique experience of being at a fashion show, where there’s all that buzzing liveliness, expectancy and exhilaration.
