On Saturday 7th November 2020, Democratic candidate Joe Biden won the White House, defeating Republican leader Donald Trump in the US Presidential Election. The number of votes for Biden in Pennsylvania led the new president to victory.
Over 74 million people voted for Joe Biden in this election with Kamala Harris as his running mate. Biden pledged to be a “president for all Americans,” after American media outlets projected Donal Trump’s defeat. The new 77 year old president tweeted, "The work ahead of us will be hard, but I promise you this: I will be a President for all Americans - whether you voted for me or not.” Biden is also America’s former vice president, and in a separate statement he said, “With the campaign over, it's time to put the anger and the harsh rhetoric behind us and come together as a nation. It's time for America to unite. And to heal."
Joe Biden’s inauguration to the White House will take place on January 20th 2021. He has made history as the oldest man to win the presidency – a position he tried to obtain twice prior to being elected as Obama’s vice president in 2008.
Arab leaders took a moment to congratulate Biden on his election as the President of the United States with Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan tweeting, “Congratulations to Joe Biden and Kamala Harris on winning the US elections. Our sincere wishes for further development and prosperity for the American people. The UAE and USA are friends and allies with a strong historic partnership that we look forward to strengthening together.”
Oman’s Sultan Haitham bin Tariq Al-Said sent a congratulatory letter to Biden expressing “his sincere congratulations for winning the confidence of the American people and for his election as President of the upcoming presidential term,” while Jordan’s King Abdullah, said he “looks forward to working with the president-elect on further advancing the solid historic partnership between Jordan and the United States.”
Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, Lebanon’s President Michel Aoun and Iraq’s president Barham Salih also congratulated Joe Biden on his victory.
