We were all super excited when Gigi Hadid had announced her pregnancy, alongside her long time beau, former One Direction member, Zayn Malik and when she finally gave birth to her baby girl, we were all waiting with baited breath to find out what they had named their little princess…
The name wasn’t announced in the most conventional of ways, but it was noticed that Gigi had updated the bio on her Instagram profile as she simply added “Khai’s mom” to it. So now that we know what the A-list couple named their baby, many want to know what the rather unique name means.
A nod to their culture and heritage, with Gigi being half Palestinian and Zayn being Pakistani, sources close to the couple have suggested that the name Khai was actually chosen because it is Arabic and has a sentimental attachment to Gigi’s family. In Arabic, the name Khai actually means “crowned.”
It has been reported that Gigi dedicated her daughter’s name to her grandmother on her father’s side, whose name was Khairia Daher Hadid, who she happened to be very close to growing up, until she passed away in 2008. The name Khai is also a little tribute to her beloved sister, Bella – whose middle name is Khair.
Khai Hadid-Malik is the model and pop singer’s first child and was born in September 2020. Since announcing her pregnancy, Gigi has shared posts and throwbacks as she recounted her experience becoming a mother, but has been especially careful with being private about Khai and not revealing any images of her face.
When Khai was born, her father Zayn Malik took to Instagram to share the news and posted a poignant image with the caption, “Our baby girl is here, healthy and beautiful. To try put into words how I am feeling right now would be an impossible task. The love I feel for this tiny human is beyond my understanding. Grateful to know her, proud to call her mine, and thankful for the life we will have together x.”
