Swearing in four new judges at Dubai’s DIFC (Dubai International Financial Centre) courts, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, has appointed the first female Emirati common law judge.
In a virtual ceremony on 8th February 2021, attended by The Dubai Crown Prince Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, Nassir Hashim Nasser Abdulalla Al Nasser, Maha Khalid Mohammed Al Mheiri, Lord Angus James Scott Glennie, and Sir Peter Henry Gross were sworn in as judges. Angus Glennie and Peter Gross were appointed as judges of the Court of Appeal (CA), whilst Al Mheiri and Al Nasser were appointed as judges at the Court of First Instance (CFI) at DIFC Courts.

Maha Al Mheiri is the first ever Emirati female judge to be appointed to the Courts of First Instance. She had first joined the DIFC Courts in 2012 as a Case Progression Officer and was then assigned to Judicial Officer in 2013, before becoming a Small Claims Tribunal (SCT) judge in 2017. Al Mheiri and Al Nasser are graduates of the Emiratisation program launched ten years ago to support the Dubai International Financial Centre’s Emiratisation efforts.
Sheikh Mohammed praised the role of women in shaping the UAE’s future and commended them on their proven competence in high-level roles.
