Alwaleed Philanthropies has joined forces with the World Scout Foundation to launch the first Saudi university-based scouting units. The move aims to support women and youngsters’ involvement in scouting locally and internationally and encourage greater participation in community volunteering within the higher education sector. Plus, the newly launched initiative will support the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 goal of rallying one million individuals to volunteer per year.
The partnership agreements aspire to align volunteering programmes in Saudi universities with the framework of the World Scout Foundation, as well as prepare students to participate in non-profit development projects. Additionally, the schemes will work to improve civic engagement by building partnerships with third-party institutions within the community to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030.

This year, during the pilot phase of building structured women and youth scout groups in Saudi universities for the first time, five universities are expected to hop onboard. The first two agreements have been signed with Princess Nourah Bint Abdulrahman University and Prince Sultan University. And further accords will include more universities in the Kingdom as part of a broader scheme in the future. HH Princess Sama bint Faisal Al Saud, who has supported young women to participate in community engagement programmes throughout the Kingdom, emphasised the importance of encouraging youth to participate in volunteering programmes.

“Our countries need to empower and encourage women and youth to contribute positively to the continuous growth and development of our societies,” the World Scout Foundation board member and first Head of the Saudi Girl Scouts Committee said. “ Scouting is one of the most effective ways to develop the required skills, knowledge and sense of responsibility to improve wellbeing of our local and global communities.”
