Nature should not be taken for granted, something that World Environment Day, celebrated annually on June 5, reminds us. Described as one of the biggest annual events organised by the United Nations, it was created in 1972 to generate awareness about the significance of nature. It also aims to inspire everyone to take action to protect the environment.
This year, Pakistan is the official global host of World Environment Day and the focus is on Ecosystem Restoration. With a “Reimagine. Recreate.Restore” slogan, the event also sees the launch of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021-2030). Ecosystem Restoration is all about switching from taking advantage of nature to healing it and it entails salvaging ecosystems that have been degraded or destroyed, as well as conservation of those that are delicate or still intact. So the plan is to start a global mission to revive billions of hectares to help prevent, stop and reverse the damage that’s been done.
While urban and rural landscapes have different ways to adapt and restore ecosystems, people also need to eliminate the pressures on the environment. And there are so many ways we can help do this, from growing trees, one of the easiest and best ways of caring for the environment, to changing our diets and cleaning up rivers and coasts.
Water Conservation
Making just a few simple changes in our everyday lives can make all the difference. And one of the really impactful switches we can make is to ensure we help to reduce the amount of unnecessary water going down our drains.
“Water plays perhaps one of the most integral and multifaceted roles in sustaining every aspect of our ecosystems, environment and our very existence,” says Francois Frigaux, Regional Director of Sensus, a Xylem brand, a world leader in smart technologies for the utilities sector. “One of the key steps we as individuals, and as businesses can each take to help protect our precious ecosystems is to be more conscious in our consumption of water.”
Here are four simple but effective ways Frigaux has shared to help us safeguard the precious resource.
- Turn the tap off in between rinsing when brushing your teeth and you could save up to 200 gallons of water per month
- Switch the tap off during those 20 seconds when you’re scrubbing your hands with soap to help save up to 6 gallons per day.
- Lather up your hair with shampoo with the tap off and you could save up to 150 gallons of water in a month.
- Wash your vegetables and dishes in a sink of water instead of under a running faucet to massively reduce water wastage.
