If you love playing sport, but avoid it when you get your period, you might not have to any longer! Did you know that 1 in 4 girls around the world drop out of sport during adolescence? With one of the key reasons cited being fear of leakage while on their period, Adidas delved into an important and previously untapped market.
Speaking about being a sportswoman and the importance of talking about periods in sport, American basketball player, Layisha Claredon who plays for the Minnesota Lynx in the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) said, “I think there’s still a lot of shame and stigma associated with periods and that’s why I think it’s so important to break the silence around the topic by talking about it openly and creating a platform where we can do so. As someone who menstruates, there’s still a sense of embarrassment at having and being on your period when it’s one of the most natural things.”
To combat the stigmas surrounding playing sport while menstruating and encouraging women to carry on in their sporting discipline, on June 15th 2021, Adidas unveiled its latest product innovation, designed to keep young girls experiencing their period in sport: the new TechFit Period Proof Tight, featuring an absorbent layer to help protect against leaks when worn with a tampon or pad.
Adidas also introduced its new “Stay in Play Trainer’s Lounge,” as well as a collaboration with Dr. Georgie Bruinvels and Orreco who have created free resources and lesson plans for schools around the world.
The Period-Proof Performance Tight features a layered, highly absorbent pad and Flow Shield to help keep athletes on the move through their period. This is part of Adidas’ newly launched “Stay in Play” campaign, which is focused on giving female athletes the confidence and tools they need to stay in play throughout their cycle.
The “Stay In Play Trainer’s Lounge” is designed to help educate young girls and provide a more ideal restroom experience at sporting events. All attendees will have access to free period products, an introduction to the Period Proof Tight and be able to choose from recovery treatments that help ease discomfort that can result from their period.
The collection is now available on adidas.com, in stores and via the Adidas app. Join the conversation on Instagram @adidaswomen and Twitter @adidasWomen.
