Music fans across Pakistan are tuning in to season 14 of Coke Studio, but the second song to be featured is leaving many grooving to the bits. The song "Kana Yaari," which is entirely sung in Balochi, has become a new online sensation featuring Pakistani vocalist Kaifi Khalil, Abdul Wahab Bugti playing the Tambura, and rapper Eva B.
Eva B is Pakistan's first hijabi rapper from Lyari known for her underground hip-hop beats. She goes by her pseudonym, which is a combination of the name "Eve" and the initial for "Balochi," with her identity remaining a secret. Her style of music was, in fact, inspired by American rapper, Eminem.
"I was blown away and fascinated by what I had heard. I went on to ask my friends what this music is really about. I never thought that music could be like this," she said in a recent interview with Coke Studio.
She got her first start in 2018 by doing a collaboration with her cousin, Meer. One of the songs that got people talking was a remake of the anthem theme for Gully Boy, "Apna Time Ayega," leaving some calling her a "Gully Girl." The song became an instant hit online, which persuaded the rising star to pursue a career in music.
Although she has since won the hearts of fans all over, pursuing a career as a rapper wasn't an easy hurdle since even her family tried persuading her against pursuing a career in music. However, she was able to find a middle ground and did a collaboration with designer Zari Faisal and Patari. Lyrically, the song is about the rapper pursuing her dreams and, sure enough, it became a hit and got everyone talking about it online.
Ever since, Eva B has been making new songs and performed at award shows such as Lux Style Awards in 2019. And, with Coke Studio broadcasting her recent collab to a broad audience, the sky's the limit for the Pakistani diva.
