Following her Oscar nomination for Pedro Almodóvar’s Parallel Mothers, Penelope Cruz is already amid preparing to star in a biopic about this infamous car brand. Cruz, starring alongside Adam Driver as Enzo Ferrari, will play his wife, Laura . The pair built their eponymous luxury sports car company together, and this film is all about them.
So who is behind it? Best known for his directorial role in movies such as The Last of the Mohicans, Collateral, Heat and The Insider, Michael Mann is not only directing but has also written the script which is based on the book by Brock Yates, Enzo Ferrari: The Man and the Machine.
The forthcoming film is titled, Ferrari and is set in 1957, where the story follows a rather challenging period in Laura and Enzo’s life. From the tragedy their faced as a couple when their only son, Dino and heir to the Ferrari business, passes away to the threat of bankruptcy – and in such uncertain times, Enzo gambled and made the decision to participate in a historic race in a bid to win back their losses – the Mille Miglia race, which takes them 1,000 miles across Italy.
More about the film and its cast has not yet been revealed, but what we do know is that Shailene Woodley will join Penelope Cruz and Adam Driver as Lina Lardi, who was Enzo’s mistress and the mother of his second son, Piero. Piero goes on to become the vice chairman of Ferrari.
It has been reported that filming will begin in Italy in May 2022 in Modena, Italy which is the hometown of Enzo Ferrari, and the Emilia-Romagna region.
Director and screenwriter, Michael Mann has been working on this film for around 20 years as a passion project, and had it have taken off when he wanted it to, was due to star Hugh Jackman, Christian Bale and Noomi Rapace. Judging by Mann’s repertoire, this film is going to be iconic.
