The UAE, over the last few years, has been striving to remain committed to making the UAE a greener and environmentally sustainable country and does so every day by launching new and innovative initiatives. Crown Prince of Dubai, HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of Dubai Executive Council has launched “Dubai Can,” an initiative that looks to lower the use of single use plastic bottles across the emirate.

To begin, 30 drinking water stations will be situated across Dubai to urge residents to refill their drinking water bottles instead of buying new ones. The campaign also encourages residents to install water filters in their homes and work places. The public drinking water stations will also be maintained when it comes to the standards of hygiene and will be strictly adhering to municipal, federal and healthcare regulations.

“Dubai Can” is just one part of the UAE’s plans to make Dubai a pioneering sustainability destination on the world map and the best city in the world to work, live and vacation in. This initiative also falls in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals and the UAE NetZero 2050 campaign.

His Excellency Helal Saeed Al Marri, Director General of Dubai’s Department of Economy and Tourism, said in a statement, “The initiative seeks to encourage citizens, residents and visitors to be active players in building a more sustainable future, and to contribute in saving wildlife and the marine environment. We hope Dubai Can will set in motion a new environmental movement across our city and the wider UAE, transforming the mindsets of people so that we can achieve positive change for a more sustainable future.”

The water station initiative comes after the Executive Council of the Emirate of Dubai’s announcement that customers will be charged 25fils for every single-use plastic bag they use at checkout counters of every store.
