When you go shopping, are you tired of collecting up plastic bags and not sure of how to recycle them? Well, to combat this problem, Abu Dhabi have taken the step to ban plastic bags completely. The capital of the UAE officially went plastic bag free as of June 1st 2022.
The announcement was first made in April 2022 by the Environment Agency — Abu Dhabi (EAD) that city would take first step in reducing the consumption of single-use plastic bags – but it won’t stop there as the city intends on implementing further limits in order to reduce the consumption of single use plastic products across the capital.
In 2019, according to data found by the World Government Summit, there were 11 billion plastic bags used every year in the UAE alone. Currently, it is only Abu Dhabi that has taken these measures to reduce the use of single use plastics, while Dubai is taking a more subtle approach by introducing a 25 fil charge per single-use plastic bag from July 1st 2022.
