Dubai's profound appreciation for calligraphy is vividly demonstrated by the Museum of the Future, where an Arabic calligraphy quote from Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum graces the innovative building's exterior. This artistic homage to calligraphy finds a kindred spirit in the inaugural Dubai Calligraphy Biennale, an event recently unveiled by the Dubai Culture and Arts Authority. Set to commence on October 1, this biennale serves as a resounding testament to the diverse and essential role of calligraphy in the realm of artistic expression, knitting together Arab heritage with the long-standing technique.
The forthcoming Biennale is poised to spread its cultural resonance across the city, unfurling more than 15 exhibitions hosted across 20 venues, including prominent locales like Dubai Design District, Etihad Museum, Khawla Art Gallery, Expo City Dubai, and DIFC Gate Avenue. More than 200 artists from both domestic and international backgrounds will bring this ambitious celebration of calligraphy to life. Their curated pieces, reflecting a spectrum of styles from classic to avant-garde, will echo in over eight languages.
Amid the kaleidoscope of calligraphic expressions, the Biennale expands beyond its primary focus by incorporating various other artistic mediums. These encompass product design, public sculptures, textiles, and more, imparting a multi-dimensional richness to the event. Importantly, Dubai Culture emphasizes the educational aspect of the Biennale, fostering engagement with calligraphy through approximately 100 sessions and workshops led by respected artists, calligraphers, and experts in the field.
Speaking to The National, Fatma Al Qurashi, the Dubai Calligraphy Biennale Project Manager, emphasized the grand vision of the event: a global spectacle that enriches Dubai's creative tapestry. She praised the Biennale's varied program, including exhibitions covering art and design, enriched by a mix of creative activities and workshops. These combined efforts enhance the understanding of calligraphy's beauty and also reveal emerging talents in the field of calligraphic arts.
