Arab women are regularly making headlines for the fantastic contributions they make to society. These female Arab inventors below are an example of this.
Bedour Al Maghrabi, Maha Al-Qahtani, Thekra Al-Otaibi and Mariam– Saudi Arabia
These three women together invented a device which is used for sense rehabilitation and stimulation in patients with sensory neuropathy issues. For this invention, the ladies won first place at the 2015 British Invention Show and Awards and second place at Korea’s International Women’s invention Exposition in 2014. Al-Maghrabi and Al-Qahtani also invented glasses for people with cerebral blindness and these glasses help them identify things around them. This invention scored the ladies second place and the silver medal at the Korean International Women’s Invention Exposition (KIWIE) IN 2015 and also a gold medal from the Indonesian Invention and Innovation Promotion Association.
Fatima al Fihri – Morocco
Even though al Fihri is no longer alive, she was an Arab Muslim woman who invented the very first university in 859 AD in Fez, Morocco – the University of al-Qarawiyyin. This university still stands today and is the oldest university still operating.
Mariam Al-Liliya – Syria
Again, another female Arab inventor who is no longer with us, Al-Liliya invented Astrolabes – a device used to determine the position of the sun and the planets and has been a main tool used in the fields of astronomy, astrology and horoscopes. She invented it during the 10 century AD and was even employed by the ruler (Sayf Al Dawla) of her home city, Aleppo because her handcrafted designs were so sophisticated.
