Emma Dumont, The Gifted
Every fall brings with it a new TV season of sensational new programs and returning favorites. This year is no exception for featuring programs of starships, superheroes and horror. Here are six new series and season premieres you need to check out this fall.
Star Trek: Discovery
The first official Star Trek television series in over a decade, Discovery is a prequel series that will take place a decade before the events of Captain Kirk and company boarding the Starship Enterprise. The show will focus on the adventures of the starship USS Shenzhou with a colorful cast that will include Sonequa Martin-Green, Terry Serpico, Maulik Pancholy, Michelle Yeoh and Doug Jones.
The Orville
Perfectly timed with the arrival of a new Star Trek series is Seth MacFarlane’s Star Trek parody series, The Orville. Labeled as a cross between Family Guy and Galaxy Quest, this sci-fi comedy of a starship crew will feature the talents of MacFarlane, Adrianne Palicki, Scott Grimes, Penny Johnson Jerald and Norm Macdonald.
The Gifted
Similar to FX’s Marvel ensemble series Legion, The Gifted will focus on another superhero collective where a family of mutants goes underground to escape the government and survive. The show will take place in the same X-Men universe of the films, despite not featuring any X-Men, and will feature a cast that includes Stephen Moyer, Amy Acker, Sean Teale, Jamie Chung, Coby Bell and Emma Dumont.
Stranger Things
Easily Netflix’s biggest hit that everyone is talking about, Stranger Things will return for its second season this fall. From the trailer released at Comic Con, the new season will find the four boys still dealing with the paranormal problems of the Upside Down universe and being the most geekiest of kids, dressing up as Ghostbusters and tossing quarters into the Dragon’s Lair arcade game. The surviving characters will return in the same roles, as well as the return of the psychic girl Eleven.
Black Lightning
Based on the DC Comics’ superhero, Black Lightning will join the ranks of The Flash and Arrow with his own hero series this fall. Cress Williams will play the lead role of Jefferson Pierce, a retired superhero who puts back on the suit when his neighborhood is threatened. Using his powers of electricity, he’ll be doing battle with the evil gang known as The One Hundred.
The Walking Dead
Entering into its eighth season, The Walking Dead will continue the struggle of Rick Grimes and company as they ward off the violent and despicable forces of Negan. The trailer promises there will be more action, more hostage situations, more back-stabbings and more of Ezekiel’s tiger going on the offensive. There also seems to be a bit of a time jump for a brief shot of Rick in a hospital bed with a thick and gray beard.
