While we love dressing up, it can get stressful choosing what to wear to all those glitzy events. Our solution is to take a cue from three of the biggest autumn/winter runway trends. Do you love the feel of rich and luxe velvet? Or perhaps you want to focus on the trimmings, like some discrete or opulent feather details. If your calendar includes dancing the night away, you’ll definitely have to invest in some 1980s inspired footwear covered in glitter and sparkle.
Stately Velvet
Sumptuous velvet popped up on everything on the autumn/winter catwalks, from blazers, suits and dresses to accessories and apparel, leaving us with many options. While there are many bold or pretty colours to choose from, jewel-toned pieces are just calling out to be worn this party season, with brands like Tome, Jason Wu, Altuzarra and Gabriela Hearst showing off some fabulous must-haves. Plus, if you didn’t hit Halloween in a witchy black or burgundy velvet dress, this is the time to redeem yourself. We can’t think of a better way to attend this season’s glam events than wearing this soft, warm and regal fabric.

Plush Plumage
Whether on sleeve cuffs, hems of dresses or skirts, shoes, bags and even hats, fluffy details are the autumn/winter comeback story. Lanvin, Sonia Rykiel and Prada are just some brands that featured fanciful feather trims to inject an old Hollywood-style glamour feel to party wear. One of the best examples of feathery fabulousness was Balenciaga’s exaggerated all-over marabou feather look, plus there was the way Raf Simons had little plumes sprayed upwards on Calvin Klein cocktail dresses. Fashion birds will be happy to know this trend can be worn way past festive season as there were many street friendly takes too, including J W Anderson’s look on stretchy jersey dresses with floral patterns and chain mail and Miu Miu’s feather-embellished pieces.

Bling Footwear
Let your feet take centre stage and command the dance floor with some ultra-sparkly boots or shoes. Models left a memorable impression while storming the runways in twinkly footwear. Disco-inspired diamanté slouchy boots were seen at Saint Laurent, yes we’re talking about the ones worn by Rihanna, and Chanel featured boots with space age vibes and a patent black tip. Other brands that sent statement boots that transform your outfit from drab to fab in a jiffy include Loewe, Isabel Marant and Marco de Vincenzo, where the boot featured a feminine black bow. Isabel Marant also presented glitter-encrusted shoes, as did Mary Katrantzou and Miu Miu.
