Jewellery runs in Maya, Meena and Zeenat Mukhi’s genes. With their father, Chandru Mukhi, hailing from an impressive line of Indian jewellers that traces back to 1875, and their mother, Effat Kreidie, the creative maestro behind Effy’s Jewellery, it was the most natural step for them to establish their own jewellery label, Mukhi Sisters. And, unsurprisingly, since launching the Beirut-based fine jewellery brand in February 2009, the sisters’ superbly crafted statements of originality have served as some seriously scintillating conversation starters.
Known as the brand that “transforms stories and personal moments into finely crafted daywear jewellery with real individuality,” the creations with an emphasis on energies divulge each sister’s particular taste, pastimes and passions. And each collection is about the special, poignant moments and experiences in their lives. The trio, who opened their first store in Beirut Souks in 2011, use an enthralling spectrum of colours, making the most of the beauty of precious and semi-precious stones, gold and diamonds to create the bold boho chic meets vintage style pieces.
Born into a world of brilliance and sparkle, the third-generation jewellers have undoubtedly been inspired by their Indian and Lebanese heritages. While their father showed a fondness for gemstones, their mother’s love for innovative styles and blending stones has also influenced the sisters. And growing up around such a strong example of female entrepreneurship has, of course, played a large role in their success story too.
“I trained in jewellery design yet have to say that I learned the most important things from my parents. In addition to learning about techniques and materials, my sisters and I received first-hand training in everything from inventory to administration, marketing… anything and everything to do with running a jewellery business,” Maya, the one who initiated the business idea, told “Essential” Magazine.
The winners of the Fine Jewellery Category at Fashion Trust Arabia 2019, which offer pieces for men and babies, as well as eyewear accessories, have been part of some exciting collaborations over the years. These include ones with Italian brand Aonie and artisanal jeweller Roma Narsinghani. As women’s empowerment promoters, they have also teamed up with Diplowomen, a physical and digital platform that inspires women through knowledge sharing, mentoring and networking. Plus, they have participated in various regional and international shows. Most recently, in December they joined other Lebanon lovers in the “To Beirut With Love” initiative by Creatives for Lebanon, Art for Beirut and Sotheby’s to raise funds after the August 4 blast. They donated a special piece to the charity auction that ensured proceeds go to the credible NGOs rebuilding the country.
