Mental health is an important aspect of our everyday lives and should be something we check in on daily, with ourselves and those we care about and these are 5 simple steps to ensure that you’re staying on top of it all to help you feel positive.

Connect!

Good relationships and interacting with others is important for your mental wellbeing, and in case you have to socially distance, it might be best to arrange calls and Zoom video conferences with your friends and family. Connecting with people can enforce a sense of belonging and self-worth, an opportunity to talk about your feelings, or simply share what your day was like! If you can see your friends and family, have dinner together or go for a long walk. Volunteering at a local charity or organization can also help encourage a feeling of purpose.

Move!

Your physical wellness greatly affects your mental wellness and keeping fit is a great way to release those endorphins and make you feel energized.

It has been proven that keeping fit can improve your mental wellness by raising your self-esteem, when you can see what your body has achieved, helping you to set goals and attain them, and causing chemical changes in your brain which can help to change your mood for the better!

Learn!

Learning a new skill can boost your self-esteem and allow you to explore your talents and find joy in something you’ve always had an interest in! The skill may become a hobby that may introduce you to a new realm of people who all enjoy the same thing. It doesn’t have to be taxing, it could be anything as simple as teaching yourself a new recipe, working on a DIY home project, learning a new language, pottery, painting and more!

Give!

Acts of kindness and giving can not only be good for your own mental wealth but also for that of others. Whether you are donating money, food, clothes or furniture, when someone else has a positive experience because of you, it can feel rewarding and give you a sense of purpose and the ability to connect with those who are looking for your help or expertise. They don’t all have to be charitable acts, but something as simple as saying thank you to someone for something they have done for you, listening to friends and family about how they are, spending time with family or offering your help to someone who needs a hand with DIY can go a long way.

Meditate!

Paying more attention to the present moment can improve your mental wellbeing. This can include your thoughts and feelings, your body and the world around you, and much of the time mindfulness can be attained by meditating.

Mindfulness can help you enjoy life more and understand yourself better. It can positively change the way you feel about life and how you approach challenges and help you feel calmer and less anxious or agitated.
