These Middle Eastern-Made Movies Are Hoping To Win An Oscar

Awards season is never far away, and with the Middle Eastern film industry evolving and growing rapidly, regional filmmakers are vying for top spot at film festivals, and of course, the Oscars. Winning an academy award is a big deal for filmmakers and actors galore, but these are the international movies made by Middle Eastern and Muslim filmmakers that are hoping to nab the prize for Best International Feature Film at the 2023 Oscars.

Sweden

From Sweden, Tarik Saleh’s film “Boy from Heaven” is a political thriller about a fisherman’s son who becomes caught up in a ruthless power struggle between Egypt’s religious and political leaders.

Saudi Arabia

With the kingdom’s burgeoning film industry producing some of the most unique tales, Saudi Arabia’s submission is director Mohammed Al-Salman’s “Raven Song.” The film is a coming-of-age comedy that follows a young man who develops an infatuation with an enigmatic woman.

UK

The UK has submitted “Winners” by Scotland-based, British Iranian director Hassan Nazer. Nazer’s film is set in a poor Iranian village and follows the journey and wonderment of two children who find a treasurable sculpture in the desert.

Moroccan filmmaker Maryam Touzani’s “The Blue Caftan” conveys the story of Halim and Mina, a married couple running a traditional caftan store in one of the country’s oldest medinas.

Maha Haj’s drama “Mediterranean Fever” confronts the dynamics of male companionship and the challenges that come with living under Israeli occupation.

Denmark

Set in Iran, Ali Abbasi’s thriller is Denmark’s official Oscars submission. “Holy Spider” is based on a true story and centered on a family man who eventually becomes a serial killer.
