The Tricks to Lupita Nyong’o’s Accentuating Two-Toned Cat-Eye

To mirror Lupita Nyong’o’s role in “Black Panther,” make-up artist Nick Barose created the feline flick inspiration we’ve been waiting for.

Lupita Nyong’o

Lupita Nyong’o has been making headlines lately thanks to “Black Panther,” the Marvel Studios’ superhero film that is shattering box office records. And for the actress’s recent BAFTA appearance, her make-up artist, Nick Barose, wanted to pay tribute to her role in the movie that’s smashing Hollywood's outdated notions about diversity.

So a feline flick was the perfect salute to the production with a member of the big cat family in the title. And the New York-based celebrity make-up maven clobbered all our bold winged eyeliner expectations by injecting a wash of metallic blue eyeshadow. What’s more, Barose, known for his innovative, cool and effortless approach, placed it just right, in the inner corners, to really make Nyong’o’s eyes pop. By making the cat-eye two-toned, Barose really gave the classic look new life and added dimension.

To complement the Mexican-Kenyan star’s striking eye make-up, natural hair and black Elie Saab dress, Barose opted for a stunning red but not too red (persimmon-range) lipstick. Technically, pairing teal liner with a red lip shouldn’t work, but because we’re talking about Nyong’o, goddess extraordinarie, it does. The result was a fun and unexpected play on the ’80s look.

“I wanted the make-up to feel regal and fierce,” Barose said. “Dramatic graphic liner that looks cat like, adds so much toughness and attitude and when paired with perfect elegant red lips, it gives the classic, feminine red lips a fun and tougher attitude.”

The best part is if you’re as obsessed with the bold winged eyeliner look as we are, you can copy it thanks to the glam master sharing his tricks. Here’s step-by-step guide:
- Start by prepping eyelids with an eye colour base to keep the shine away (Barose used Lancôme’s Aquatique in 06 Sienna).

- Then line your eyes with a pencil, tracing liner along upper and lower lash lines and wing it out for dramatic effect. Make the lines a bit thick to really frame the eyes and look panther-like! For extra dramatic effect, you can add liner in the water lines (Barose used Lancôme’s Art Liner pencil in Noir Intense.)

-  Continue by applying a metallic blue coloured crayon to the inner corners of the eyes (Barose used Lancôme’s Ombré Hypnôse Stylo Shadow Stick in 31 Bleu Chrome).

-  Finally, add two coats of mascara on your upper lashes (Barose used Lancôme’s Monsieur Big).
